St Peter’s Church, New Plymouth
Our Founding
Established on 23 November 1879, St Peter's Anglican Church has stood as a spiritual anchor for the community of New Plymouth on Green Turtle Cay for nearly a century and a half - through storms, rebuilding, and generations of faith.
Our patron, St Peter the Apostle, was a fisherman and disciple - a fitting namesake for an island community whose life has long been connected to the sea.

Our History
From foundation to faithful service today
Over 150 years of island faith, community service, and Anglican witness.
1879
The church was built and established, laying the foundation for over a century of worship.
1932
A hurricane destroyed the original church, testing the resilience of the parish.
1935
The community rebuilt with a smaller wooden church, rededicating it to carry the congregation forward.
1999
The Parish Hall was relocated and built
A dedicated Parish Hall was built next to St Peter's Church to give the congregation a lasting home for fellowship, learning, and community life.
1999
The Rectory was rebuilt and dedicated
The Rectory was rebuilt and dedicated, providing a home for the parish priest at the heart of the community.
2005
While the church was being rebuilt, the parish continued worshipping in the Parish Hall, keeping the community together.
2009
St Peter's was rebuilt on the Original Foundation
by the Most Reverend Drexel W. Gomez
Rebuilt on its original foundation under the leadership of the Most Reverend Drexel W. Gomez, with the Reverend Dwight H. L. Rolle serving as Rector.
2019
Hurricane Dorian
In 2019, Hurricane Dorian devastated Green Turtle Cay and the wider Abaco islands, damaging homes and businesses across the community. The parish continues to recover and rebuild together. St Peter's lost both it's parish hall, rectory and the church was severely damaged.
2027
Due to the impact of Hurricane Dorian in 2019 we are looking ahead, we have already rebuilt the rectory and repaired the church. We have created the plans to rebuild the Parish Hall, continuing the community's legacy of renewal.
Our Tradition
Drawn from the deep roots of the Church of England, St Peter’s worships in the rich tradition of Anglican Christianity — one that holds Scripture, Reason, and Tradition in creative tension, and welcomes the full breadth of Christian experience.
Our worship is grounded in Holy Scripture, the historic creeds, and the ordered prayer of the Book of Common Prayer.
The Sacraments
Baptism and Holy Communion sit at the heart of our life together, marking the milestones of faith from birth through to eternity.
St Peter's is part of the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands, within the worldwide Anglican Communion.
Our Parish
St Peter's is a congregation within the Parish of Sts Peter and Anne, sharing in a wider ministry across North Abaco while keeping its own distinct identity here on Green Turtle Cay. We're grateful for the clergy, lay leaders, musicians, Sunday school teachers, and faithful parishioners - past and present - whose service carries this congregation forward.
